Study in the UK: The Complete 2026 Guide

The UK holds four of the world's top ten universities, offers 3-year bachelor's and 1-year master's degrees (saving a full year of costs), and its Graduate Route lets you work for 2–3 years after graduation without a sponsor. Here's the complete picture — visa, CAS, real costs and the post-study path.

Why Study in the UK?

The UK is the world's second-most-popular study destination, and it's built around efficiency: 3-year bachelor's and 1-year master's degrees mean you finish a full year ahead of students in the US or Australia — and pay a year less in living costs. Combined with the prestige of Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL and LSE, and the Graduate Route's flexible post-study work, the UK remains a top pick for ambitious students.

Heads-up: international tuition is among the world's highest (£25K–45K/year), the IHS adds £776/year to your visa bill, and from 1 January 2027 the Graduate Route shortens to 18 months for bachelor's/master's graduates (PhD stays 3 years). Apply before then if you want the full 2 years.

The UK Student Visa (Tier 4)

You apply online for a Student visa after your university issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number.

Processing time~3 weeks outside UK; ~8 weeks inside; priority +£500, super priority +£1,000
Work during study20 hrs/week during term; full-time in holidays
Post-studyGraduate Route: 2 years (3 for PhD)

What is a CAS?

The Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is a unique reference your university issues after you accept the offer and pay the deposit. Without it you cannot apply for the visa. Universities usually issue CAS 3–6 months before the course starts — and a CAS can be reassigned if your visa is refused for a genuine reason.

Missing-cost alert: the IHS is paid upfront for your entire visa length, including the 4-month post-course buffer. A 3-year bachelor's visa costs £776×3 + £388 ≈ £2,716 in IHS alone, on top of the £558 fee. Budget it in advance.

Affordable & Easy-Entry Universities

Not everyone needs Oxford — and you don't have to pay £40K/year to get a UK degree. These universities are easy to get into and light on the wallet: lower tuition, high offer rates, and foundation/pathway years that let you in even if your grades or English are a little short. University of Law, BPP and Arden are the classic private picks; Wrexham, East London and Cumbria are the cheapest public options.

Degrees, Intakes & Admission

🎓 Bachelor's — 3 years

Apply via UCAS (5 choices, £28.50). Main deadline 15 January for September entry; Oxford/Cambridge/medicine close 15 October. Need A-levels or equivalent + IELTS 6.0–7.5.

📘 Master's — 1 year

The UK's 1-year taught master's is a huge time and money saver. Apply directly to the university (often rolling, closes 3–6 months before start). Need a 2:1-class bachelor's equivalent + IELTS 6.5–7.5 + SOP + 2 references.

🔬 PhD — 3–4 years

Funded via studentships (stipend ~£19K–20K/yr tax-free) and council funding (EPSRC, ESRC). Deadlines vary by department; some funded positions are advertised year-round.

🗓️ Intakes

September is the main intake; January intakes exist for many master's. For a 1-year master's starting Sept 2027, apply between October 2026 and May 2027.

UCAS timeline (bachelor's)

  1. May–Sep: open your UCAS account, draft personal statement
  2. 15 Oct: Oxford/Cambridge/medicine deadline
  3. 15 Jan: main UCAS deadline
  4. Feb–Apr: decisions; reply to offers
  5. Jun–Aug: meet offer conditions; CAS issued; visa application

After Graduation: The Graduate Route

The Graduate Route lets you stay and work without a sponsor, salary threshold or job offer — 2 years for bachelor's/master's (3 for PhD), with no restrictions on job type, self-employment or hours. It's the flexible runway you need to find a Skilled Worker sponsor. Important 2027 change: applications from 1 Jan 2027 get 18 months (bachelor's/master's).

Funding reality: UK scholarships are competitive — Chevening (fully funded), Commonwealth Scholarships, and university merit awards cover the gap. See UK full-scholarship options and the Chevening guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much money do I need to show for a UK student visa?+

First year's tuition plus £1,529/month × 9 (London) or £1,171/month × 9 (elsewhere) for living costs — roughly £14K–17K living funds. The money must have sat in your (or your sponsor's) account for 28 consecutive days before you apply. If you've already paid tuition or accommodation, that reduces the amount you must show.

Can I work while studying in the UK?+

Yes — up to 20 hrs/week during term time, full-time during holidays, for degree-level study. Dependants on some visas can work too (since Jan 2024, only PhD/government-sponsored students can bring dependants). The Graduate Route then removes all work limits for 2–3 years.

Is IELTS mandatory for UK universities?+

Most UK universities accept IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, or Duolingo (check each). Exemptions exist if your prior degree was taught in English in an approved English-speaking country. Some scholarships accept alternative proof. See our TOEFL vs IELTS guide.

What's the difference between the Graduate Route and a Skilled Worker visa?+

Graduate Route: no sponsor needed, any job, 2 years (18 mo from 2027), but doesn't renew. Skilled Worker: needs a licensed sponsor + £41,700 salary, but counts directly toward settlement (ILR) after 5 years. Most graduates use the Graduate Route as the bridge to a Skilled Worker role.

When should I apply for my UK student visa?+

You can apply up to 6 months before your course start and should aim for 2–3 months before, since processing is ~3 weeks but biometrics slots fill up. Your CAS is valid for a limited window — apply promptly once you receive it.
