To study in Netherlands from Pakistan you register on Studielink, get admitted, apply for funding, then have your Dutch institution file the visa for you so you can collect the MVV in Islamabad. Pakistani applicants need a visa, which means an earlier deadline than the Dutch 1 May date.
The whole sequence runs on one rule: the visa follows admission, so every institutional deadline you care about sits before the visa paperwork, not after it.

Study in Netherlands from Pakistan: Step by Step
Applications for the 2027-2028 academic year open on 1 October 2026. Studielink is the mandatory national portal, and everyone uses it regardless of which university they apply to. If you are still in Pakistan you will not have a DigiD, so you create a Studielink account without DigiD by uploading a passport scan for identity verification. That works from Pakistan and takes a few days rather than requiring a Dutch address.
Deadlines then split. Numerus fixus, or capped, programmes close on 15 January 2027, with ranking numbers published on 15 April 2027 and about two weeks to accept. The general deadline is 1 May 2027. For non-EU/EEA applicants who need a visa, institutions set earlier internal dates, commonly 1 April 2027, and Maastricht and VU Amsterdam both publish that date. Erasmus Rotterdam runs to 15 April.
| Milestone | Date | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Studielink opens for 2027-2028 | 1 Oct 2026 | Register even if you have not chosen a programme |
| Numerus fixus deadline | 15 Jan 2027 | Capped programmes stop here |
| Non-EU visa deadline | about 1 Apr 2027 | The date Pakistani applicants should work to |
| General deadline | 1 May 2027 | Too late if you need a visa |
| Proof of funds rate | EUR 1,130.77/month (2026) | Revised annually by the IND |
Money: Proof of Funds and What You Cannot Access
The IND requires EUR 1,130.77 per month for university and hbo study in 2026, which is the figure your sponsor must demonstrate. It changes each year, so confirm the current rate on the IND site rather than budgeting from a cached page.
You cannot access DUO student finance on a study permit, and tuition is the institutional fee, not the statutory EUR 2,771. Budget the full fee and treat scholarships as an offset.
The MVV and Arrival
Pakistan is not visa-exempt, so you go through the TEV procedure: your institution applies for the MVV and residence permit together. The legal decision period is 60 days, and recognised sponsors usually land well inside it. After a positive decision you have three months to collect the MVV sticker at the Dutch embassy in Islamabad, where appointments are booked through isl-ca@minbuza.nl, and 90 days to travel.
Once you land, report to the IND within two weeks to collect the residence permit, register with the municipality for your BSN, and arrange health insurance within four months if you are not already covered. A TB test may be required within three months.
After graduation, the orientation year permit is valid for one year and is not extendable, but you may apply for it within three years of finishing. That is worth knowing now, because it changes how long a Dutch degree stays useful.

Documents and Admission
Admission for non-EU applicants runs through the institution's own portal after your Studielink registration, and each programme publishes its own requirements. The common set is a bachelor's degree and transcript, a passport, an English test result, and a motivation letter or reference where the programme asks for one.
Dutch institutions assess documents closely and will query a transcript without a marking key or a degree certificate that does not state the award in English. Get certified translations done early. A query in March can push a decision past an April visa deadline, and the visa deadline is the one you cannot move.
Conditional offers are common when you are still finishing a degree. Read our conditional vs unconditional offer guide before accepting one, because the conditions usually carry a fixed date and missing it releases your place.
Some bachelor programmes at Dutch universities are numerus fixus, meaning capped and selected rather than first-come. Those close on 15 January 2027, and selection may involve a test or assessment rather than grades alone. If your programme is capped, the January date replaces April as your working deadline.
Housing, Costs and the First Weeks
Housing is the single biggest risk for international students in the Netherlands. Dutch cities have a genuine shortage, and many institutions cannot guarantee a room for first-year international students even when they say they will try. Start looking as soon as you accept a place, and treat any offer of guaranteed housing carefully: read what it actually promises and for how many months.
Ask the international office directly what the institution guarantees, in writing, and what it does not. A budget built on rent you have not secured is not a budget.
The BSN, your citizen service number, is issued when you register at the municipality after arrival. You need it for a bank account, insurance and most forms of payment, so registering at the town hall is the first administrative task after you land rather than something that can wait.
For the money side, our study abroad cost and budget guide covers building a monthly budget for a Dutch city, and health insurance for international students europe explains when Dutch basic insurance starts to apply to you.
